In Matthew 4:1-11 Jesus was tempted by Satan, and through this temptation of Jesus in the wilderness, I feel like there are some really great clues and patterns to look for when Satan or our own sinful flesh comes to tempt.

1. Jesus was tempted with provision.

Matthew 4:3

3. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

Jesus had been without food for a while and was hungry. Satan wanted Jesus to turn a few stones into bread. The loose Path Light translation of the temptation would go like this. Satan said.. Paraphrasing "because after all you never know when the Lord is going to provide for you. You could die out here in the wilderness." What a liar! Outside of this certain time I am sure it was fine for Jesus to turn stones into bread. But in the context of making a way for yourself versus trusting God for your provision it would have been a sin. There is always a temptation for me to do things in a way that will provide a guaranteed provision, at least I think :-) instead of trusting God for what He has said.

Jesus said:

Matthew 4:4

4. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

2. Jesus tempted with presumption and self-will.

Matthew 4:5-6

5. Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

6. And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

Again the following is a loose Path Light Translation.. Satan said. "Hey do whatever you want to do, God will protect you, after all you’re the man right? Listen Jesus your covered in mercy and grace right?" Lair!

Jesus said:

Matthew 4:7

7. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

3. Jesus tempted with power, and a side step to the cross.

Matthew 4:8-9

8. Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

9. And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

A very very loose translation :-) Satan said. "Listen Jesus, can I call you J-man for short? No?.. How about big JJ No?.. Ok if you will worship me I can give you all this you see before you, AND you don’t need to go to the cross. What do you say power, fame and friends just a little worship and all is yours." This sounds all too familiar Satan the liar trying to get Jesus and us to do things the wrong way and promising great reward and pleasures. Satan wants to be in the place of God in our lives as well, this tactic has not changed at all. Remember after Jesus was raised from the dead, all power was in His hand and all the kingdom that was shown to Jesus at this time was not owned by Him paid in-full. Satan, What a Liar!

Jesus said:

Matthew 4:10

10. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

Jesus comforted by angels:

Matthew 4:11

11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.
